Annual Design Challenge

Our annual Design Challenge is set for March 6 from 5:30-7:30. Holly Altman, Diane DiMaria, Ann Ferkovich and Nicole Dunn will be our panel of quilt artists. Here’s how it works. About a week before the first session of the challenge, our panel will be given a theme. When they come to the first class they will share their thoughts about their design process including initial reactions to the challenge and ideas for executing a project. About two months later panelists and students will return with completed projects.

1 Million Pillowcase Project Underway

American Patchwork & Quilting, Timeless Treasures and many other suppliers are sponsoring the 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge beginning January 1. We have agreed to join the effort by offering free pillow case classes and distributing the pillowcases to local organizations for people who need extra help. Free pillowcase patterns are available at the front counter. A pillowcase can provide comfort for a homeless person or battered spouse or their children (as well as a bag to carry belongings). Since we already have been doing this for 9 years, we thought it would be fun to try new patterns. You can sew at home or at our free workshops. Here is where you can download patterns:

Hello Yellow, Red, Red & Blue Moons

What do “Red, Red, Red!” “Hello Yellow!” and “Blue Skies and Blue Moons” have in common? They are the latest color classes offered by Ann Ferkovich in January, February and March, respectively. Sign up for one or all and learn how to use these colors. Ann is also offering “Many Ravens Landscape: Bending the Rules of Technique and Design,” which use raw-edged machine applique’ to build a landscape. Ann is the queen of quilt as you go threadwork.

Drawing Class for Fiber Artists

Diane DiMaria has put the finishing touches on her new 3-session drawing class which begins in January. Diane, a painter and fiber artist, will teach you a grid technique to make drawing and composition easy for beginners or more advanced fiber designers. This is a great class with a meticulous teacher. Space is limited so sign up soon.

Unleash Your Creative Beast With Holly

Holly Altman is offering a design class to help you make the leap into imaginative quilting. You will explore the elements and principles of design with fun exercises. Understanding design principles helps you create a better quilt. This is a good class for beginners.

Bag of the Month Classes

We are introducing our Bag of the Month classes. Each month we will teach a different bag or tote for you to make. New skills will be introduced at each session. Libby Carlsten and Mary McCusker are instructors for this quarter.

Quilts of Valor Class

Scott’s Surprise, from Loose Change, will be a free class Monday, Jan 18 for persons, who want to make a quilt to give to a veteran. If you want to keep the quilt or give it to a friend, then you pay for class. The Northern New Mexico Quilt Guild makes and gives quilts to veterans.

Cinnamon Stick Triangle Quilt Challenge

Edyta Sitar, author of Hop to It and Friendship Triangles, has created a great idea for making a triangle quilt. Buy a Cinnamon Stick (2 pieces of fabric and a special triangle paper, rolled together) for $2.75/stick. Sew as many as you like. You can purchase and sew as many as you like. Bring the completed ones to the store anytime before March 15 and then return to the store March 20 to discuss triangle quilt projects. We will have ideas and suggestions. You will receive back as many as you handed in, but the colors and types will be a surprise. A show and tell class will be scheduled several months later so everyone can see what was made. Our quilting helpers will keep track of the number you sew and create the package you get back. You can participate even if you live out of town by calling in your order and mailing back your completed triangles. We will have a handout at the front counter explaining this in detail. It’s easier to sew it than explain it!

Other Fun New Classes

Melody Griego is busy making samples for Cherie, a great beginners quilt, Floral Bouquet, using strips and Oasis, a version of Boston Commons. Lorraine Gruys offers Just Pockets, ideas for adding pockets to vests or jackets and 1st Class Shirt; Jean Callaghan has Rayon Jacket and Stack n Whack-i-pedia, and Sharon Wirtz has Emma, a Girl’s Dress. The Foundation was created by Jim Heath in memory of his late wife, Linda, who was an avid quilter. The Foundation helps new quilters from the Santa Fe area learn traditional piecing, buy supplies, buy new sewing machines and attend classes at SFQ and the Sewing Center of Santa Fe. Applications are available at both stores.
