The following is a list of classes for this quarter. Skill building technique classes are on the first page, then new projects followed by date of offering and the last section is the Block of the Month classes available now.

Techniques and Skill Building

For night classes go the to red door on the far left of SFQ. Marked “C”.

Beginning Machine Piecing - Mary - Learn to piece with a 1/4 inch seam, proper cutting, ironing and sewing techniques. Make two quilt tops and learn half square triangles. Three (3) classes per session. Section 10: Sun, Jul 18 & Aug 1 & 15; 5-8; or Section 11: Mon, Aug 16 & 30 and Sep 13; 12-3; or Section 12: Thur, Sep 2, 16 & October 7; 6-9; Fee: $50.00

Bindings - Mary- After you have finished your quilts you want to learn to do mitered corners that are sharp and joining techniques that leave no lumps in your binding. Wed, July 28, 6-9; or Sat, Aug 14, 1:30-4:30; or Mon, Sep 20, 12-3; Fee: $21.00

Hand Applique - Cindy - Learn the basics of hand applique, the right tools and procedures for this beautiful skill. Take time this quarter to learn how to do this. Tips about special glues, freezer paper, marking pens that might help. Wed, Aug 18, 1-4; Fee: $21

Hand Quilting - Cindy - Learn the basics of quilting by starting a small block or bring an existing quilt. Learn about threads, needles, thimbles. This is an enjoyable class for beginners. Sat, Sep 25, 9-12; Fee: $21

Hand Piecing - If you don’t want to piece by machine Cindy puts together a class when enough people have expressed an interest. Be sure to get your name on the list at the front desk.

Free Motion Quilting - Learn the basics of free motion, doodling on your quilts by starting small and building your skills. Students will learn a variety of stitches and then go home and practice, practice, practice. Mon, Jul 19, 1-4; or Sun, Aug 15, 9-12; or Wed, Sep 15, 6-9; Fee: $21

Just Stippling - Cindy - Work only on the stippling/vermicelli stitch until it makes sense to you. It takes practice but Cindy has great hints to help you be successful. Fri, Jul 30- 9-11: Fee: $14.00

Beginning Embroidery - Deb - Learn beginning embroidery stitches that are the basis for many more complicated stitches. No prior experience needed. Brush up on skills you haven’t used for years. Sat, July 10, 10-1; Fee: $21

Stitch in Thursdays July 8 and 22, 4-7. Work on bindings, mending, cutting, embroidery, applique, chat with fellow stitchers. At the meeting on the 8th at 6 pm Cindy will give book reviews on at least 5 books in the store that deal with beginning piecing or easy quilt books.

Yo-yo Animals - Deb Martinez - Everyone’s been buying the pattern so now it’s time to make one. Choose monkeys, elephants, dachshunds. Anything is fine. This will help you get it started and finished. Wed, July 14, 5:45-9:15; Fee: $24

It’s a Wrap - Cindy - This is a fun class. Wrap clothesline with fabric and turn it into a great bag, bowl or tote. Easy for beginners, great fun for anyone. Zig Zag anyone? Fri, July 16, 9-1; Fee: $28

Crazy Quilting - Getting Started - Deb Martinez - This is the class for learning how to prepare your scraps, make a background for your future crazy quilting stitches. You can then join the Sunday crazy quilting BOM if you want. Sat, July 17; 2-5; Fee: $21

French Braid Obsession - Julee - Choosing your fabrics is the hardest part of this quilt so plan ahead. Good for beginners looking for a slightly more challenging layout. Great for those fabrics in your stash you don’t want to cut. Elegant with orientals, fun with novelties, good for large prints and scenes. Sun, July 18, 12:30-4:30; Fee: $28

Log Cabin Spiral Border - Deb - This class is a border only class. Learn a style that you can add to a future quilt or add to a quilt that needs a fancier finish. There will be a sample border in the store for you to hold next to your quilt. Wed, July 21, 6-9; Fee: $21

Seminole Piecing - Deb - Learn the basics, resizing and make some patterns. This is a great skill to have in your quilter’s repertoire. Can be used for borders, stripes, strips, piecing, place mats, totes. So attractive & versatile. Take before Beyond the Block if you are interested in that class. Friday, Jul 23, 9-1; $28

Crazy Eights - Jean - Jean discovered this table topper pattern in Montana and brings it to New Mexico. Might transition to a tree skirt if you so choose. Quick and fun. Precut before class to speed up the time. Fri, July 23, 1:30-5:30; Fee; $28

Wedding Ring - Nicole Dunn - Try this traditional quilt pattern. Nicole has made three versions using different templates so pick the style that appeals to you. If you just want to learn the technique try a 4 block table centerpiece instead of a quilt. Sat, July 24 & August 14, 10-1; Fee: $42

Coneflower Paintstik - Cindy - No sewing only paintstiking. Use one piece of fabric and make this incredible wall quilt. Samples show the warm and cool color tones. Beginners welcome. Sun, Jul 25, 1-5; Fee: $28

Twinkle - Learn this simple pattern that makes large blocks. Use scraps or choose some wild prints. The trick is the joining of the pieces. Beginners welcome. Tues, July 27, 2-5; Fee: $21

Learning About Mediums in Santa Fe - Ann Ferkovich - Are you having trouble channeling your artistic talents when embellishing fabric. Find a new medium and see what you can do. You will learn to use varnishes, fusibles, foil, acrylic paint, acrylic inks, lutrador , pellon, modeling paste, heat guns, bronze powder, gel mediums and anything else you want to throw into the mix. Learn about building layers of embellishments to enhance a vase, a wall hanging. No prior experience necessary. Wed, Jul 28 & Aug 4, 1:30-3:30; Fee: $28.

Fashion Forward: Fabric Covered Thongs (feet type) - Cindy - Spice up a simple pair of the cheapest thongs and turn them into designer footwear. You’ll be a hit among family and friends. Thurs, Jul 29, 1-5; Fee: $28

Rayon Jacket - Jean - This pattern was discovered in Hawaii. Brush upon your seeing skills with the slippery but beautiful fabric, rayon. Silk batting makes this feel great when you wear it. Fri, Jul 30 & Aug 13, 1-4 ; Fee: $42

Table Graces - Deb - These place mats and napkins look hard but are so easy. Deb has lots of short cuts she has developed to make these go quickly. These can be addicting. Sat, Jul 31, 9-1; Fee: $28

Latte - Julee - This is a fun quilt but challenging to get all the colors in a monochromatic color way from very light to very dark. Great stash challenge and builder. Beginners welcome. Sat, Jul 31 & Aug 28; 1:30 - 4:30; Fee: $42.00

Dresden Plates - Deb - This smaller version of a traditional block is a wonderful way to use scraps if you want. The template makes this easy so if you haven’t learned to use them then take this class. Great wall hanging, baby blanket or table topper. Sun, Aug 1, 12:30-4:30; Fee: $28

Drawing Class - Diane DiMaria - This class is full. Sat, Aug 7 & 21 and Sep 18, 10-1.

Preparing digital images for shows - Julie Filatof - Julie is going to give a free presentation to guild members and anyone else who wants to perfect their presentations of their quilt pictures when submitting for a show or contest. Sign up at front desk so we have a count. Sat, Aug 7, 1:30-2:30; Free

Sensu Fans - Jean - This is a great quilt and easy for beginners to learn a new block shape. Curved piecing is easy and minimal. Tues, Aug 10 & 24, 9-12; Fee: $42

Griddle Cakes - Cindy - You’ll have fun making this quick and easy summer throw. Buy the kit or use one of those layer cake stacks you purchased. You will get a good start on the quilt during class. Easy cutting. Wed, Aug 11, 9-1; Fee: $28

Zippers - Mary - Learn to put a zipper in two pieces of fabric. This is a basic how to. You will need the zipper foot that comes with your machine. Talk to Mary before class about other feet you may have that might also work. Thur, Aug 12, 2-4; Fee: $5. Use these skills again in the messenger bag class.

Beyond the Block - Deb - This was popular last quarter. You can continue working on your quilt you started or start new this time. We recommend you take seminole piecing along with this class as the techniques will overlap. Fri, Aug 13 & Sep 10, 9-12; Fee: $42

Drunkard's Path -Mary- You will use accurately made templates to learn curved piecing. Good for beginners wanting a design challenge. Make a quilt, a table top, a table runner. Wed, Aug 18 and Sep 1, 6-9; $42

Cogwheels - Julee - This is a simple but effective quilt that goes together quickly. Beginners welcome. The hardest part is choosing the fabric. Kits available. Fri, Aug 20, 9-1; Fee: $28

Boxtrot - Mary - So easy you don’t need this class unless you need a motivator. Kits will be available. Good for beginners. Fri, Aug 20, 1:30-4:30; Fee: $21

Simple Silk Quilts & Free Motion - Nicole Dunn - Nicole is playing with several designs to make a small wall hanging or lap quilt with doupioni silk. Good class to learn how to manage silk fabric. Sun, Sep 26, 1-4 & Oct 17, 1-4; Fee: $42 If there is space people who want only a free motion class can sign up only for the 2d class for $21. Priority to students in silk class.

2010 Block of the Month (BOM) Classes

A Block of the Month class meets once per month and takes usually 12 months to complete. Some classes are shorter in duration. Your skills build over the year without becoming overwhelmed by a project.

Hop To It - Laura Hyatt - We are in the home stretch for this BOM and several have already finished theirs. You can start late if your are doing a few blocks or are really motivated. All Saturdays: Jul 24; 1:30-4:30; Aug 21, 1:30-4:30 and Sep 18, 1:30-4:30; Fee: $21 per class.

Crazy Quilting - Deb - This has taken on a life of it’s own. Join any time and enjoy learning the basics and complexities of crazy quilting. Great fun, great group. Lots of skill building. Sundays: Jul 11, Aug 8, Sep 12; Fee: $21 per class.

Beginner BOM day and night - Cindy - This is a fun class to continue learning the basics of piecing.
Mondays, July 26, Aug 23, & Sep 27, 12-3; or Monday evenings: July 19, Aug 16, & Sep 20; 6-9; Fee: $21

Cancellations for any class need to be made 48 hours in advance of that class in order to receive a refund. No exceptions are made to this policy.
